In the lobby of Opheusen Town Hall, there are two commemorative plaques for the units that liberated the village. In October 1944, Opheusden was liberated by units of the American 101st Airborne Division. After German counterattacks and the flooding of the Betuwe, the final liberation did not come until April 1945 by the 1st Belgian Brigade Piron.
